The wrestling community is mourning the loss of one of its most legendary figures, Rey Misterio Sr., who has passed away at the age of 66. His son, El Hijo de Rey Mysterio, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing his profound grief and gratitude for the support of friends and family. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Known globally as Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr. leaves behind a legacy that has profoundly influenced generations of wrestlers and fans. His death has inspired an outpouring of tributes, including a moving message from Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, which expressed its condolences to his family and lamented the loss of a true icon.
Rey Misterio Sr. began his career as a boxer before transitioning to professional wrestling, debuting in 1976. Over the years, he became a celebrated figure in promotions such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, the World Wrestling Association (WWA), and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. His international fame grew after he represented Mexico alongside wrestling legend Konnan in the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup” during the Starrcade event organized by World Championship Wrestling in 1990.
Renowned for his acrobatic wrestling style and captivating presence in the ring, Rey Misterio Sr. achieved significant success throughout his career. Among his numerous championships were the Revolution Tag Team Championship, which he won with his son, the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship. Beyond his in-ring achievements, he also played a pivotal role as a mentor, guiding several prominent wrestlers, including Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.
Rey Misterio Sr.’s legacy is deeply connected to his family. He trained his nephew, WWE superstar Rey Mysterio, who has since become a wrestling legend in his own right. His nephew’s son, Dominik Mysterio, is also carving out a career in WWE. Both Rey Mysterio and Dominik honored his memory, with Dominik posting emotional photos on Instagram accompanied by a simple black heart emoji.
This loss comes just weeks after the death of Rey Misterio Sr.’s brother, Roberto Gutierrez, who passed away at the age of 76, making this a particularly challenging time for the family.
Although Rey Misterio Sr. officially retired in 2009, he occasionally returned to the ring, with his final match taking place in 2023. In 2006, he was inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame, a testament to his enduring influence and contributions to the sport.
