TRADITION MEETS MODERNITY AS SANWO-OLU LEADS LAGOS BOAT REGATTA CELEBRATION (PHOTOS)

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu took center stage as Lagosians gathered to celebrate the much-anticipated Lagos Boat Regatta in grand style.

Dressed impeccably in a white top and cap paired with stylish blue adire pants, the Governor showcased Lagos’ rich culture and pride as he waved the Lagos flag from a stunning luxury yacht.

Leading a colorful procession of excited Lagosians and tourists, Governor Sanwo-Olu set the tone for the festivities, which were accompanied by lively music and dancing along the serene and picturesque Five Cowries Creek.

Tradition, modernity meet as Lagos celebrates boat regatta

The extraordinary event was not only a celebration of Lagos’ rich cultural heritage but also a vibrant showcase of the city’s unique connection to water—an essential element of the people’s identity and livelihood.

This year’s theme, “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” underscores the integral role waterways play in shaping the history and identity of Lagosians.

With a beautiful and creative display of traditional and modern water transportation, tourists that trooped out for the event were not disappointed.

Just as participants from the five divisions that make up the state adorned their boats with vibrant colors and intricate designs, featuring symbols that represent their beliefs, spirituality and cultural identity, there were also modern boats like the ski car boat, wakesurf boats, and crossover boats with which private boat owners’ infused creative ingenuity into the celebration.

Tourists

Tourists seated at the various viewing centres located at Wealth & Crown, Fiki Marina, the Federal Civil Service Club, Caverton End, the Boat Club, LASWA Waterfront and others on the bridges within the environment were thrilled by the various performances, such as the traditional dances and masquerade shows, which convey stories and cultural messages that resonate with their origins, beliefs and lifestyles.

As each of the boats sailed by breaking waves, the beauty of the Lagos water glimmer with endless shades of blue.

Indeed, Lagos is a city defined by its dynamic waterways.

The state governor captured the mood when he said, “Through this festival, we illuminate the aquatic splendour that makes Lagos a premier destination for tourists and stakeholders from across the globe.

“This regatta is a reflection of our resolve to embrace and promote our traditions while creatively harnessing the boundless opportunities within our maritime resources.

Governor Sanwo-Olu added “The regatta’s traditional tour and ceremonial rites remind us of the deep historical significance of water to our people.”

He added: “This regatta represents the Lagos we envision: a city of innovation, culture, and boundless possibilities.

“It is a testament to our administration’s commitment to tourism and the creative economy as pivotal contributors to the social and economic growth of Lagos under the T.H.E.M.E.S.+ agenda.”

While commending the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awosika, said “This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life, underscores the integral role our waterways play in shaping our history and identity as Lagosians.

“The Lagos Boat Regatta is not only a showcase of our vibrant traditions but also a testament to our shared commitment to fostering tourism, cultural pride, and unity.”
