The Kogi State Government, led by Ahmed Usman Ododo, has made it compulsory for students applying for admission to higher institutions to provide their parents’ Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC).

This was announced by Mr. Sule Enehe, Chairman of the Kogi State Board of Internal Revenue Services, during a press conference in Lokoja on Wednesday.

Enehe clarified that the policy, which was introduced two years ago at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba, and Federal University, Lokoja, is intended to enhance the state’s revenue generation.

The policy has sparked debates, with civil society groups and the public criticizing it. Some activists have also threatened legal action, labeling the initiative as ineffective.

However, Enehe defended the policy, stating that it was introduced with good intentions and is backed by law.

“The Kogi State Government’s decision to require students to submit their parents’ TCC during registration is lawful and well-intentioned. Section 24(f) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria mandates citizens to declare their income and pay taxes.

Additionally, Section 96 of the Personal Income Tax Act prescribes prosecution for those who fail to comply with tax obligations,” he stated.

Enehe expressed surprise at the recent public criticism, pointing out that the policy had been in effect for two years. He explained that a memorandum had been sent to the Secretary to the State Government at that time, and public notifications were made via radio and television jingles.

He also emphasized the financial strain on the state, which supports three universities and other higher institutions, stressing the importance of public cooperation.

“We will enhance public awareness about this policy. It is in the best interest of the people and vital for the development of Kogi State,” he added.
