The Lagos State Government has announced that enforcement of the Electronic Call-Up (E-Call Up) system along the Lekki-Epe corridor will officially commence on June 16, 2025, marking a critical step in its ongoing efforts to address traffic congestion and improve logistics management in the rapidly developing axis.

The disclosure was made by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The meeting brought together major industry players and transport unions to deliberate on traffic challenges arising from increased industrial activities around the Lekki Free Zone.

Dr. Hamzat emphasized that the E-Call Up system is specifically designed to regulate the movement of articulated trucks and tankers, with the goal of preventing the type of chronic gridlock that once plagued the Apapa axis.

“This system is not just about traffic; it’s about improving the efficiency of our logistics chain and protecting the long-term viability of our road infrastructure,” he stated.

Reiterating the state’s commitment, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that while previous stakeholder engagements had reached consensus, unforeseen difficulties during earlier enforcement attempts led to a temporary pause. He announced the immediate removal of all obstructive articulated vehicles currently along the corridor.

“This is not a revenue-generation exercise. It is a deliberate and strategic move to enhance traffic flow, safety, and infrastructure management across Lagos,” Osiyemi said.

The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by key representatives from the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), Lekki Worldwide Investment Company (LWIC), Lekki Free Zone (LFZ), Lekki Deep Sea Port, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), NNPC Retail, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The E-Call Up system is a central part of Lagos State’s broader smart city and infrastructure optimization agenda, aimed at fostering a more efficient and sustainable urban transportation system.
