No fewer than 20 people, including fish farmers and woodcutters, have been killed, with several others injured, in a fresh attack by Boko Haram on Hambagda, a community located a few kilometres from Gwoza in Borno State.

The attack reportedly occurred when a landmine, believed to have been planted by the insurgents, detonated on the outskirts of Gwoza Local Government Area.

The Civilian Joint Task Force said the incident happened around 11 a.m. on Thursday.

According to the group, some of the victims were woodcutters who had gone out to gather firewood to support their families.

“It is a tragic day for us in Gwoza. We lost about 20 loggers, and several others suffered gunshot injuries.

“The attackers planted improvised explosive devices along the route and, after the blast, opened fire on the unarmed civilians,” a CJTF source said.

Reports indicate that about 18 bodies have so far been recovered from communities surrounding Gwoza.

Reports cautioned that the death toll may increase, as several individuals are still missing.

Residents said the attackers seemed to be moving through the area in successive raids, heightening fresh concerns about security in farming communities, especially as the planting season approaches.
