SANWO-OLU PRAISES LASU AS IT EMERGES MOST SOUGHT-AFTER UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA

Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended the Lagos State University for emerging as the most sought-after university in Nigeria in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), describing the development as evidence of the institution’s growing academic reputation.
According to data released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Lagos State University recorded 84,426 applications, placing it ahead of other top institutions nationwide.
The University of Lagos followed with 78,240 applicants, while Obafemi Awolowo University recorded 60,370. The University of Ibadan and University of Benin ranked fourth and fifth with 58,895 and 55,425 applications respectively.
Reacting to the ranking, Sanwo-Olu said the development reflects growing public confidence in LASU’s academic standards, infrastructure, and institutional reforms.
“LASU’s improved performance is a direct result of our deliberate focus on fostering an academic environment that leads to prosperity,” the governor said.
He added that the administration’s long-term ambition is to position LASU among the world’s top 10 universities, stressing continued investment in education as a key pillar of Lagos State’s development strategy.
According to him, the institution’s progress is also a result of visionary leadership, committed faculty, and improved funding under the state government’s THEMES Plus agenda, particularly in education and technological advancement.
Sanwo-Olu also praised the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, describing her leadership as transformative and central to the university’s recent achievements.
He urged staff and students to sustain the momentum, noting that LASU’s rising profile reflects discipline, innovation, and a sustained commitment to academic excellence.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration would continue supporting the institution in its efforts to produce high-quality graduates and strengthen its global competitiveness.
