President Bola Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid to host the 2026 CAF Awards, as the country intensifies efforts to stage two major African football events.
The approval was contained in a statement issued by the Nigeria Football Federation, which also confirmed presidential backing for Nigeria’s proposal to host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly later this year.
Tinubu reportedly gave the endorsement during the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi after a meeting with Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Also present at the meeting were Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, acting CAF General Secretary Samson Adamu, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, and former NFF President Amaju Pinnick.
Scheduled for October, the CAF Ordinary General Assembly will bring together leaders of CAF’s 54 member associations, representatives of its six zonal unions, and top football administrators across Africa.
The CAF Awards, one of the continent’s most prestigious football ceremonies, celebrates outstanding achievements by players, coaches, and contributors in African football.
Nigeria last hosted the event in January 2017, when Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez won the men’s Player of the Year award, while Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala claimed the women’s prize.
More recently, Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen won the men’s African Footballer of the Year in 2023, followed by Ademola Lookman in 2024, while Oshoala extended her record with another women’s title in 2023.
CAF is expected to announce the final host city for both events in the coming months.
