Atlético Madrid strengthened their grip on fourth place in La Liga on Tuesday with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Osasuna, while Real Betis secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League after defeating Elche CF.

Atletico took the lead in the 15th minute through forward Ademola Lookman, who calmly converted from the penalty spot after a handball incident involving Javi Galán.

The Madrid side doubled their advantage in the second half when Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth headed home from close range with 20 minutes remaining.

However, Atletico’s evening was complicated by a red card shown to Marcos Llorente following two reckless fouls.

Osasuna pushed for a comeback and pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time through Kike Barja, but Atletico held on to secure all three points.

The victory leaves Atletico fourth on 66 points, behind newly crowned La Liga champions FC Barcelona on 91 points, second-placed Real Madrid on 77 points and Villarreal CF on 69 points, with all three teams having a game in hand.

Elsewhere, Levante UD climbed out of the relegation zone after staging a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory away at Celta Vigo.

The defeat dealt a blow to Celta Vigo’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, while the relegation battle remains extremely tight, with five clubs now level on 39 points around the drop zone.

Real Betis’ 2-1 victory over Elche ensured the Seville-based side will finish at least fifth, guaranteeing qualification for Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since the 2005–06 season.

Betis currently sit on 57 points, seven clear of sixth-placed Celta Vigo with only a few matches remaining in the season.
