The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, has announced the interception of 10,126 parcels of cannabis sativa across various locations in the state, with an estimated Duty Paid Value of N743.4 million.

The Area Comptroller, Mr. Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this on Tuesday while handing over the seized substances to the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Area Command, Mr. Williams Ekundayo.

Afeni described cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana, as a psychoactive substance with severe negative effects on users.

He explained that the operation should be viewed as a preventive intervention.

“Without this intervention, our society would face a wave of drug-related crises, and our already overstretched healthcare and rehabilitation systems would be overwhelmed.

“Its circulation would have increased drug-related health challenges and put immense pressure on psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities,” he said.

Receiving the consignment, Ekundayo described the seizure as a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

He praised the Customs officers involved and called for stronger collaboration between the NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs Service.

Ekundayo also warned individuals involved in illicit drug trade to desist, stressing that security agencies would continue to track and arrest offenders.
