A viral video circulating on X has sparked public outrage after it appeared to show an elderly man allegedly attempting to lure a 13-year-old girl under the guise of buying cocoyam from her.
In the footage shared on Friday, the young girl, identified as Adijat, was seen hawking cocoyam when the man called her over. What initially appeared to be a routine interaction reportedly took a disturbing turn when the man began asking personal questions.
The man was heard asking the girl for her name before allegedly making an inappropriate remark, asking if she would be in a relationship with him.
“Will you date me?” he asked.
An eyewitness who recorded the incident from a nearby window later intervened, confronting the man over his conduct and questioning why he would make such a statement to a minor.
In response, the man denied any wrongdoing, insisting he was only joking. “No, no, no, I was only joking and playing with her,” he said.
However, the girl maintained that the man’s comments were inappropriate. She recounted that he asked her to date him and made additional remarks before saying he would go and bring money.
“He asked me if I could date him. I told him he is too old. Then he said he is married… then he said he wants to go and bring money,” she said in the video.
The man, when pressed further, denied the allegations, claiming he merely greeted the girl and asked about her well-being and family.
The incident quickly drew the attention of passersby, many of whom condemned the man’s actions and expressed concern over the safety of children engaged in street hawking.
The development adds to growing concerns over child safety, particularly following a similar incident reported in March involving a man allegedly attempting to lure a young girl hawking avocados with money.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
