Gunmen have killed five people, including a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and two others, in Olegabulu community, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday night at about 8 p.m. when the assailants stormed the community and opened fire.

A local source said the attackers, numbering four and riding on two motorcycles, initially blended in with residents by exchanging greetings in the local dialect before launching the assault.

“The assailants were not Fulani because they spoke our dialect and greeted people. No one suspected them,” the source said.

“They went straight to the traditional ruler’s residence, opened fire, and killed him alongside two of his family members. They later moved to another house and killed two more people.”

The attackers were said to have operated for about 20 minutes, leaving one person injured before fleeing the scene.

The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the incident on Friday, stating that five persons lost their lives while one sustained injuries.

“It’s true the incident happened. Five people were killed and one person injured during the attack,” he said, adding that police operatives had visited the scene.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Udeme Edet, said she was yet to receive an official report on the incident.

“I am yet to get the report, but I am still waiting for it,” she stated.

The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in parts of Benue State, where communities have continued to face violent assaults by armed groups.
