MAN ALLEGEDLY STRANGLES FATHER TO DEATH OVER MOTORCYCLE IN ONDO
Following an altercation over a motorcycle, Sunday Abilewa, 32, is accused of strangling his father to death in Isua-Akoko, Akoko South-East Local Government Area, Ondo State. He has been placed under detention in custody.
Following his arrest by Ondo State Police Command officers, the defendant was charged with one count of murder and presented before a magistrates’ court.
Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the incident took place at Eberi Quarters in Isua-Akoko on December 31, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m.
According to Suleiman, the defendant had gone to Abu Abilewa, his 68-year-old father, and demanded that he purchase a new motorcycle for him.
The defendant allegedly grabbed his father’s neck and strangled him to death after an argument broke out after the father refused.
The prosecutor went on to say that because the defendant was allegedly under the influence of strong narcotics at the time, the deceased’s wife’s attempts to step in were ineffective.
According to him, the offense is punished under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006, and it violates Section 316.
Suleiman consequently asked the court to hold the defendant in custody while the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) provides legal counsel.
The defendant was sent to the Olokuta Correctional Center after the sitting magistrate, F.A. Akinboboye, refused to accept his plea.
It was decided to postpone the matter until February 25, 2025.
