WORLD NEWS: 19 ARRESTED AFTER TURKEY HOTEL FIRE DISASTER
According to the Anadolu official news agency on Monday, 19 persons have been taken into custody by Turkish police as part of their investigation into a fire at a hotel in a ski resort that claimed 78 lives.
According to the agency, among those arrested are the head of another business owned by the hotel owner, a deputy fire chief, and the deputy mayor of the municipality in charge of the Kartalkaya resort.
The hotel administration and the responses of the town of Bolu’s emergency services and authorities have been the main subjects of the investigation into the January 21 tragedy.
The Grand Karta hotel’s main electrician, head chef, son-in-law, and owner were all detained on Friday.
The 12-story structure that overlooked the ski slopes lacked functional smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire alarms, and appropriate fire escape routes, as survivors and experts have pointed out.
According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, when the fire ripped through the Grand Karta hotel in the middle of the night, 238 people were sleeping there.
