BREAKING: REPS CALL FOR STRICT ACTION AGAINST MURDER, MANSLAUGHTER, OTHERS
The House of Representatives has urged relevant Federal Government agencies to take strong action against homicidal and femicidal acts in Nigeria.
The resolution came after a motion was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary, introduced by Rivers lawmaker Awaji-Inombek Abiante, along with three other members.
Supporting the motion, Abiante emphasized that the right to life is a fundamental human right protected by the Constitution. He pointed out that cases of homicide, including murder, manslaughter, and other violent crimes resulting in loss of life, have been increasing across the country, fueling public calls for justice.
He said, “Fernicide, which is the intentional killing of women and girls due to their gender, has become a significant concern, with several reported cases in recent years.”
After the motion was approved, the House encouraged the National Judicial Council to help designate specific divisions within the current courts at all levels so that homicide, femicide, and associated matters can be handled quickly.
