NAFDAC has discovered illegal drugs at the Onitsha Bridgehead drug market in Anambra State.

In a post on its X account, accompanied by a video of the operation, the agency disclosed that the drugs were concealed inside plumbing material shops.

During the raid, officials confiscated two trailer loads of unregistered narcotics, banned tramadol, and counterfeit medicines.

The tweet read: “In a startling discovery, NAFDAC uncovered prohibited drugs hidden inside PLUMBING MATERIALS SHOPS at the Onitsha Bridgehead Drug Market.

“Officials seized two trailer loads of unregistered narcotics, banned tramadol, and counterfeit drugs concealed within these shops.”

This follows a recent report by the DAILY POST stating that traders in Onitsha are facing significant losses due to the ongoing closure of six major markets by security operatives for over two weeks.

Nigerian security forces took control of the markets, shutting down all shops under the pretext of cracking down on counterfeit and expired drug dealers.

The affected markets include the Onitsha drug market, Oduwani (Power Tools and Allied) market, Surgical Line market, Plumbing Materials market, Ogbogwu fashion line market, Bridgehead provision market, and part of the timber dealers market.
