COURT SUMMONS VDM OVER ‘CRIMINAL DEFAMATION’ OF MERCY CHINWO
The Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 has summoned blogger Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), for alleged “criminal defamation” of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s reputation.
According to a court summons dated March 5, 2025, Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna directed the defendant, VDM, to appear before the court on March 13, 2025, to answer charges brought against him by the complainant, Mercy Chinwo.
The charges stem from alleged defamatory statements made by VDM on social media, where he accused Chinwo of being involved in a contractual dispute and misappropriating $345,000 in connection with her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.
To support her claims, Chinwo has presented documentary evidence to the court, including emails and payment receipts, demonstrating that VDM’s allegations were not only false but also damaging to her public image and reputation.
In the criminal complaint filed by Chinwo’s legal team, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi of the Abuja-based law firm Law Corridor, the singer argued that VDM’s actions violated Sections 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24(1)(B) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.
Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna has instructed VDM to appear in court on March 13, 2025, to respond to the charges.
It is important to note that Chinwo’s legal team also filed a lawsuit against VDM in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, seeking N1.1 billion in damages. The suit demands that VDM delete, retract, and issue a public apology for all defamatory statements made against Chinwo and her brand.
On February 17, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lagos ruled that the arrest warrant against Eezee Tee over alleged fraudulent conversion remains valid and adjourned the case until March 6, 2025, for his arraignment.
In the defamation suit, Olajengbesi emphasized that VDM’s posts were made without provocation and were intended to tarnish Chinwo’s reputation in the eyes of the public.
Chinwo’s legal team has presented all relevant documents and evidence to establish that VDM’s statements are false. They argued that the blogger’s videos and posts have caused significant harm to Chinwo’s public image, professional standing, and emotional well-being.
