ABURE FORMS THREE-MAN COMMITTEE TO ADDRESS CONFLICT WITH LP LAWMAKERS

On Tuesday, the Labour Party’s leadership established a three-member team to mend the strained ties between some LP lawmakers and Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman.

LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made the announcement in a statement released in Abuja.

Ben Etanabene (Chairman), Mathew Nworgu, and Chinedu Obika, fellow lawmakers, are among the recently appointed committee members.

Abure and other members of the two chambers of the LP National Assembly have been at odds since last year on the validity of the controversial Anambra convention, which reinstated the existing leadership.

The ongoing cold war between the national chairman and the team of LP presidential candidate Peter Obi, who also has Abia State Governor Alex Otti as an ally, further fueled the confrontation.

Abure instructed the MPs to pinpoint their complaints and seek to close the communication gap during his statement to the committee.

He said, “We have invited and entrusted you with this all-important assignment of bringing together all our members in the National Assembly, both in the Senate and House of Representatives, to resolve all issues that may have existed.

“There is a need for all our members, about 40 of you, to be on the same page with the party leadership. You are our ambassadors at the National Assembly, and we are proud of some of you and the values you have exhibited.

“But we think there are still some gaps that need to be plugged, hence the urgency for this assignment. We expect that within two weeks from today, you will have concluded it and reported it back to the leadership. We assure you that the party will do all it can to ensure an enduring truce, particularly with key stakeholders such as the NASS caucus.”

The three lawmakers responded by promising to be faithful to the party and letting the leadership know that they wanted and would take the task seriously.
