
LASUBEB ADVOCATES GLOBAL STANDARD DEBATE TRAINING IN SCHOOLS
The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakeem Shittu, has urged educators to equip young debaters with world-class skills, enabling them to compete favorably on global platforms. He made the call during the two-day Train-the-Trainers workshop held at the LASUBEB Headquarters which concluded on Thursday.
The workshop, designed for school debate coaches and adjudicators, aimed to instill international best practices in debate training and adjudication.
In his address, Dr. Shittu emphasised the transformative impacts of debate; highlighting its role in fostering critical thinking, persuasive communication, and intellectual engagement as key attributes essential for future leaders.
He also underscored the collaborative efforts between LASUBEB, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria, reiterating their shared commitments to aligning Nigeria’s educational standards with global benchmarks.
Dr. Shittu further called on educators, policymakers, the media and other stakeholders to work collectively in expanding access to debate platforms. He stressed the importance of ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to develop their public speaking abilities and showcase their intellectual potential.
The UBEC Debate Desk Officer, Shamsudeen Kabir Musa, reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to fostering critical thinking and public speaking skills through strategic initiatives like the workshop. He encouraged participants to actively engage in the training, equipping themselves with the expertise required to mentor and guide young debaters for success in both national and international competitions.
Elder Dare Oritu, the National Coordinator of the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria and the lead organizer of the workshop, emphasised that the training is structured to enhance coaching and adjudication techniques.
