NIGERIAN STUDENTS OPPOSED NYSC – GOWON
General Yakubu Gowon, a former president of state and one of the National Youth Service Corps’ founders, has observed that when the NYSC was first implemented, Nigerian students opposed it.
He praised the Scheme’s managers for upholding the principle that guided NYSC’s founding.
He said “the NYSC was greeted with strong opposition from Nigerian students across the country at inception.”
However, he said that the Scheme had not only overcome the early reservations but had developed into a widely acknowledged and approved instrument for promoting national integration, unity, development, job creation, and youth empowerment in Nigeria.
This was said by Gowon during a courtesy call at his home in Asokoro, Abuja, by Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the recently appointed Director General.
Throughout the Scheme’s more than 50 years of operation, he recognized the Corps members’ multifaceted contributions to national progress.
He also commended the NYSC’s deployment program, which places Corps Members in states and regions other than their own, exposing them to Nigeria’s diverse populations and cultures.
Gowon wished Brigadier General Nafiu well and congratulated him on his appointment. He also asked him to continue the legacy of his predecessors by leading the NYSC to greater heights.
According to Brigadier General Nafiu, the creation of the NYSC in 1973 was a heavenly endeavor that has greatly benefited the nation and benefited many generations of Nigerians.
Nafiu thanked General Gowon for his fatherly role to the Scheme, stated that the purpose of the visit was to ask for his blessings, and urged him to continue mentoring the Scheme.
Following a brutal 30-month civil war that devastated the nation, the Gowon administration created the NYSC as one of the post-war initiatives aimed at reunifying, rebuilding, and rehabilitating Nigeria.
