The Lagos State Government has announced the arrest of a suspect linked to the alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area.

In a statement issued Thursday on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed its collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure justice is delivered in the case, which has drawn widespread public condemnation.

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing incident of sexual abuse involving a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State, which has understandably garnered significant public attention,” the DSVA stated.

The alleged offender, whose identity remains undisclosed, is currently being held at the Ayobo Police Station.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency noted that the case has been formally handed over to the Gender Desk Unit for thorough investigation.

“The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is actively involved in this case, and investigations are already underway in close collaboration with the Police Force. The case has been referred to the Gender Desk Unit and the alleged perpetrator is currently in custody at the Ayobo Police Station,” the agency confirmed.

The DSVA also said that the government is in direct contact with the survivor’s family and is providing full support, including medical care and psychological intervention.

“The survivor has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit (FSU) and Psychosocial Services (PSS) to ensure she receives comprehensive and immediate psychosocial support. Medical attention has also been provided,” the agency added.

The agency expressed gratitude to members of the public who raised the alarm, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and collective responsibility in tackling sexual violence in the state.

“We deeply appreciate the vigilance of the public in bringing this matter to light, as community awareness plays a vital role in safeguarding our children.”

Reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence, the Lagos State Government assured the public that it remains committed to protecting children and ensuring perpetrators face the full weight of the law.

“The Lagos State Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to securing justice for survivors of sexual violence and ensuring that perpetrators are held fully accountable under the law,” the agency noted.
