LIQUOR LICENSING BOARD CLOSES 11 UNLICENSED BEER PARLORS IN NIGER STATE
By: Motunrayo Aniwura
The Niger State Liquor Licensing Board has closed down 11 unlicensed beer parlors across Mokwa, Lavun, and Edati local government areas for violating state regulations on alcohol sales and consumption.
Acting on the directive of the Board’s Director General, Barr. Yahaya Halidu, a monitoring team discovered that these establishments lacked proper licenses and were located in areas considered inappropriate for alcohol-related businesses.
During the inspection, a hotel located near a mosque in Mokwa was reportedly found to be accommodating prostitutes, causing disturbances to worshippers nearby.
In response, the owner of the 50-room hotel expressed readiness to sell the property, suggesting it could be repurposed for an Islamic school or mosque extension.
Barr. Halidu cautioned the public that leasing properties to unauthorized alcohol vendors or sex workers could lead to the government seizing such properties.
He added, “The closures were initiated due to the beer parlors’ failure to comply with the Board’s regulations concerning the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state.
“The owners of the closed beer parlors have been warned that any attempt to reopen them will result in severe penalties, as specified in the state’s liquor licensing laws.”
