The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has denied claims that it detained popular social media influencer and activist Blossom Williams, amid growing public concern and calls for her release.

Reports had surfaced alleging that Williams, a mother of three and outspoken advocate for good governance in the Oro Nation, was arrested by police operatives while en route to a medical appointment. Her family claimed she was pregnant at the time of her alleged detention and suggested the arrest may have been politically motivated, reportedly at the instigation of Daniel Eyakenyi, son of the state’s Deputy Governor.

The incident sparked widespread outrage across social media platforms, with civil society groups and concerned citizens demanding Williams’ immediate release and a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her alleged arrest.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer Timfon John told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the command had no knowledge of any such arrest or detention.

“We are not aware of such detention for now,” she said.

Despite the police denial, a source close to Williams’ family maintained that she was forcibly taken into custody while heading to the hospital, describing the incident as a “targeted action” against her vocal activism.

Williams is known for using her social media platforms to speak out against marginalisation and poor governance in Akwa Ibom’s Oro Nation, a stance which supporters say may have made her a target.

As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear where Williams is, with her family and supporters demanding clarity from authorities and her immediate release if in custody.

Rights groups are now calling for an independent investigation into the matter to determine whether any due process violations occurred and to safeguard the rights of citizens engaged in public advocacy.
