SURETY ARRAIGNED FOR ALLEGED FAILURE TO PRESENT DEFENDANTS IN COURT

‎A 67-year-old man, Mohammed Hassan, has been arraigned before the Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly failing to produce defendants for whom he stood as surety.

‎Hassan is facing a one-count charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice before Magistrate Funke Ogun. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

‎Prosecuting officer, Inspector Esther Adesulu, informed the court that the offence occurred on May 19 at the Ojo Magistrates’ Court. She stated that Hassan had acted as surety in several cases—namely COP vs Ismaila Umoru, COP vs Yusuf Zebo, COP vs Mohammed Modu, COP vs Adamu Abubakar, and COP vs Yahaya John.

‎The prosecution alleged that despite committing to ensure the defendants’ appearance in court, Hassan failed to do so, thereby obstructing the judicial process.

‎The offence is said to be in violation of Section 97(1) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.

‎Magistrate Ogun granted him bail in the sum of ₦200,000, with two sureties in like amount,
