By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, claiming at least 21 lives and destroying property worth millions of naira.
In a statement signed by NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the forum described the disaster as a tragic reminder of the growing threat of climate change across Nigeria.
“We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community,” AbdulRazaq stated.
The NGF extended heartfelt condolences to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, the government, and the people of Niger State, expressing solidarity in the face of the calamity. The forum also commended the state government’s swift response and collaboration with emergency services to assist victims.
“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live,” the NGF chairman said. “We commit ourselves as leaders of our people to continue to work with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to strengthen mitigative actions and support relief institutions.”
The forum urged citizens to cooperate with authorities and support ongoing relief efforts, as well as to remain vigilant and responsive to environmental risks.
“We pray God to console families who have lost loved ones and properties in the Mokwa incident,” the statement concluded.
