Lagos State will commemorate World Oceans Day on June 8, 2025, to emphasize the critical need for the protection and preservation of our oceans, lagoons, and waterways. This year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” highlights the essential role aquatic ecosystems play in our daily lives, including climate regulation, marine biodiversity support, and the livelihoods of millions in Lagos and Nigeria. Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, urged citizens to appreciate and protect these natural resources, noting their significance for food, employment, recreation, and community values. He also lamented the increasing neglect of waterways, pointing to the harmful effects of pollution, overfishing, and illegal dredging on these vital ecosystems.

Today, the ecosystems of our waters are increasingly at risk due to pollution, overfishing, and illegal dredging, as highlighted by Alebiosu. He emphasized that World Oceans Day serves not merely as a celebration, but as a crucial call to action for authorities, businesses, civil society, and individuals to collaborate in safeguarding our oceans and coastal environments. A series of events and initiatives have been organized to educate and inspire the residents of Lagos towards greater water conservation efforts. Alebiosu expressed a commitment to continue advocating for the protection of water bodies against the adverse effects of human activities, hoping that the message conveyed during these events will resonate deeply with the community.
