The Take-It-Back Movement, led by Omoyele Sowore, has announced its intention to hold a national protest on June 12 to address issues of killings and undemocratic practices by those in power. In a statement from National Coordinator Juwon Sanyaolu, the movement expressed its rejection of the traditional ceremonies associated with this day, deeming them hypocritical where true freedom is absent. Instead, the group has declared June 12 as a national day of resistance, urging all Nigerians to oppose tyranny and bad governance.

The group expressed grave concerns regarding a perceived decline in democracy throughout the nation, emphasizing that the hard-fought freedoms are now being eroded by those who once advocated for change. It highlighted the ongoing assaults on freedom of speech, detailing a persistent campaign of intimidation and censorship directed at citizens by the state.

The government is repressing free expression through the Cybercrime Act, targeting journalists and activists while citizens face arrest for social media posts. In rural areas like Plateau, Benue, and Southern Kaduna, mass killings occur with alarming regularity, leaving communities devastated and internal displacement rising. The state’s inaction and complicity in these events reflect a severe erosion of democratic principles, resulting in widespread suffering and a climate of organized cruelty.

On June 12, a march is organized to advocate not only for the participants but also to honor those who have been killed in Benue, support the displaced individuals in Plateau, amplify the voices of those unjustly detained, and address the plight of the impoverished masses neglected by corrupt leaders.
