JAPAN POLITICAL PARTY TO INSTALL AI LEADER

Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

A nascent Japanese political party announced on Tuesday its intention to appoint an artificial intelligence as its leader following the unexpected resignation of its unconventional founder, who stepped down after a disappointing performance in recent elections.

The Path to Rebirth party, established in January by Shinji Ishimaru, a former mayor from a modest city in western Japan, lacks a formal policy agenda, allowing its members the freedom to pursue individual initiatives.

Ishimaru surprisingly secured second place in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial election, propelled by an effective online campaign; however, he resigned from the party after it failed to gain any seats in this year’s upper house elections.

“The new leader will be AI,” stated Koki Okumura, a doctoral candidate in AI research who identifies as an aide to the incoming leader, during a press conference.

Details regarding the AI’s features, including its implementation timeline and methodology, remain undetermined, according to the 25-year-old student at Kyoto University, who will officially assume the role of the party’s leader.

The AI is not intended to dictate the political actions of party members but will concentrate on decisions such as the allocation of resources among members, as explained by Okumura, who recently triumphed in a party contest to replace Ishimaru.

Despite garnering media interest, the Path to Rebirth has faced challenges in winning seats.

All 42 of its candidates were defeated in the June Tokyo assembly election, and all 10 candidates who contested the upper house election in July also faced losses.
