The Adamawa State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of a 57-year-old farmer, Patrick Mija, in the Labau community of Shelleng Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The incident occurred on Sunday while the deceased was returning from his farm.

Confirming the development on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Yahaya Suleiman, said that security operatives were immediately deployed to the area, with support from sister agencies and local hunters, to track down the attackers.

“We got a report that the farmer was attacked on his way coming from the farm on Sunday. Our men visited the scene and the health centre where he was confirmed dead. Our men were deployed by the Commissioner of Police, and we also got support from sister agencies, including local hunters, to comb the area. Investigation is ongoing, and we are doing everything possible to restore normalcy in the community and apprehend the perpetrators,” Suleiman said.

Residents said the attackers ambushed and shot Mija before fleeing the scene. A local resident, identified as Boyi Karfe, discovered the body and alerted the police.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama also confirmed in a post on X that the farmer was shot while returning from his rice farm.

Upon receiving the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer in Kiri led a team to the scene and rushed the victim to the Primary Health Care Clinic in Wuroyanka, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

The corpse has been deposited at the health facility while efforts continue to apprehend the perpetrators.

This development comes amid growing concerns over rising insecurity affecting farmers and travellers in some parts of the country. In August, police in the state arrested a 29-year-old man, Isiaka Hassan, for the killing of a five-year-old minor.
