The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerian workers that the National Assembly is mindful of the economic difficulties they face and remains committed to advancing their welfare through legislative action.
The former governor of Akwa Ibom State made the pledge in a goodwill message commemorating the 2026 International Workers’ Day. The statement was released in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh.
Akpabio acknowledged the economic pressures confronting workers and reaffirmed the Senate’s resolve to introduce laws that improve living standards and workplace conditions.
He noted that the 10th National Assembly understands the burden created by the rising cost of living and increasing workplace demands. According to him, the Senate remains dedicated to promoting legislation that supports a living wage, safer work environments, pension reforms, job creation, and the protection of workers’ dignity.

The Senate President pointed to the passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act and the rollout of welfare initiatives as evidence of the legislature’s commitment to labour issues.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over inflation, wage sustainability, and the increasing cost of living, which continue to place pressure on Nigerian workers and dominate public discussions.
Akpabio also urged employers across both public and private sectors to place greater emphasis on employee welfare, stressing that improved working conditions are directly linked to productivity.
He praised workers across different professions, including teachers, farmers, healthcare professionals, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private-sector employees, describing them as vital contributors to Nigeria’s economy and democracy.
The Senate President further commended organised labour groups for their engagement and patriotism, assuring that the Senate would continue collaborating with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), and affiliated unions to ensure workers’ voices remain represented in policymaking and legislation.
