The Plateau State Police Command has warned that anyone who attempts to intervene on behalf of rape or defilement suspects will face arrest, regardless of their social status or official position.

Speaking to journalists in Jos, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, stressed that rape and defilement are criminal offences against the state and should not be treated as private or family matters. He emphasised that no individual, organisation, or institution has the right to shield offenders from prosecution.

Ewah directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure that all reported cases of rape and defilement are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.

According to the police commissioner, any person who approaches law enforcement to plead for a suspect in such cases would be treated as an accessory after the fact and could face prosecution for obstructing justice.

He also urged parents and guardians to remain alert, safeguard their children, and promptly report any suspected abuse or incidents to the nearest police station or through emergency contact channels shared on official police social media platforms.

The commissioner further cited a recent case involving the alleged defilement of a nine-year-old girl in Fajul village within Langtang South Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Nanmwa Vongjen, a 43-year-old man, was accused of committing the offence.

Ewah said the victim was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment after the incident was reported. He added that the suspect was arrested and remains in custody pending further investigation.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to the crime and claimed he acted while under the influence of alcohol.

The case is currently being handled by the State Juvenile Welfare Centre, with the commissioner assuring that the suspect would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
