The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday commenced the screening of aspirants ahead of its governorship primary election in Ekiti State, with incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji appearing first before the panel.
The exercise, taking place at Amor Hotel in Katampe, Abuja, is being conducted by the party’s screening committee chaired by Tunji Olawuyi. Four aspirants are scheduled for screening between Tuesday and Wednesday: Oyebanji, Kayode Ojo, Abimbola Olawunmi, and Atinuke Oluremi.
Speaking to journalists after his 15-minute session, Oyebanji expressed confidence in the APC’s leadership to conduct a credible, transparent, and hitch-free primary. He urged the party to provide a level playing field for all aspirants and assured that the outcome of the October 27 exercise would reflect the will of party members.
“This is only the screening stage. Next comes the appeal committee, the congress committee, then the election proper. Whoever emerges must be supported, because it is not just about the aspirants, it is about returning our party to power and serving the people,” he said.
The governor, who was accompanied by political associates, National Assembly members, and Ekiti APC leaders, including Senators Olubunmi Adetunmbi, Yemi Adaramodu, Cyril Fasuyi, and the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adeoye Aribasoye, reiterated his readiness for re-election.
In a related development, another aspirant, Omolayo Oluremi, signaled her willingness to step aside for Oyebanji, whom she described as her leader, while maintaining her ambition of becoming the first female governor of Ekiti State.
“I will only step down for Governor Oyebanji. Any other person, no way. Since the creation of Ekiti State, there has never been a female governor. I want to be the first, and by the grace of God, it will come to pass,” she declared.
Oluremi also urged women to play more active roles in politics, stressing that women are the backbone of electoral success.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Ekiti State governorship election for July 20, 2026, while the APC primary will hold on October 27, 2025.
