The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Mutawakilu Ibrahim, for allegedly stabbing his grandparents to death during a heated argument over food in Kofar Dawanau Quarters, Dala Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, said it occurred around 9:30 a.m. and was promptly reported at the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to the statement, Ibrahim, suspected to have been under the influence of intoxicants, allegedly attacked his grandfather, Muhammad Dansokoto, 75, and grandmother, Hadiza Tasidi, 65, inflicting multiple stab wounds with a knife.

The victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, but were confirmed dead on arrival. Their remains were later released to family members for burial according to Islamic rites.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for discreet investigation.

“The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” SP Kiyawa stated.

The tragic incident adds to the growing number of violent crimes within family settings in Kano, which security experts and community leaders have often linked to drug abuse, mental health issues, and economic hardship.

Authorities and civil society groups have repeatedly raised concerns over the widespread use of illicit substances among youths in the state, warning that drug abuse frequently triggers domestic violence and fatal disputes.
