The body of a 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar, has been recovered from a pond in Gabari village, Garki Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa Command, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday in Dutse. He said the boy was discovered lifeless in the Mahayin gidan Toro pond, about 1.5 kilometres north of Gabari village, around 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to Tijjani, the teenager’s shoes and trousers were first spotted abandoned on the riverbank on September 30, which raised concerns among villagers. His father, Abubakar Gabari, disclosed that the boy had gone swimming in the pond around 5:00 p.m. but never returned, prompting a search.

The NSCDC noted that the body showed no signs of injury and was handed over to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites.

Commandant Muhammad Ingawa urged parents and community leaders to caution children against swimming in unsafe water bodies, stressing the need for vigilance to prevent such tragedies. He also called on residents to report unsafe areas for timely intervention.

Drowning incidents remain a recurring safety challenge in Jigawa and other northern states, especially during the rainy season when ponds, rivers, and irrigation channels become swollen.
