
BREAKING DOWN THE MAN BEHIND THE ROLE: MEET INEC’S NEW BOSS, JOSH AMUPITAN
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The confirmation by the National Council of State on Thursday comes in the wake of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s departure from the electoral institution.
In a statement released by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, it was highlighted that Amupitan’s appointment is historic, marking the inaugural time a resident of Kogi State will lead Nigeria’s election management authority.
The distinguished law professor originates from Ayetoro Gbede in the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. Amupitan currently holds the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos and has dedicated over thirty years to the fields of academia and legal practice.

Commencing his career at the University in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer, he progressed through various roles, becoming a Reader in 2003 and a Professor of Law in 2008.
Information available on the University of Jos website indicates that the incoming INEC chairman acquired all his degrees—the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate—in Law from the same institution.
In addition to his academic endeavors, Amupitan has occupied numerous administrative and national roles.
He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Law, chaired the Department of Public Law, and led the Committee of Deans and Directors at the University of Jos.
He has also represented the university on various boards, including the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, where he was a member of the Governing Council.
Prior to his nomination, he was the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at Joseph Ayo Babalola University, located in Osun State.
The legal scholar has contributed to over 50 academic publications, with his research encompassing corporate governance, electoral law reform, and legislation pertaining to the petroleum industry.
He has supervised more than a dozen doctoral and master’s candidates in law.
Professor Amupitan is affiliated with the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Institute of Management, and the National Association of Law Teachers.
Beyond academia, he has been involved with various boards, including Integrated Dairies Limited, Riss Oil Limited, and the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.
He is wed to Dr. (Mrs.) Yemisi Amupitan, and together they are parents to four children.
