EDUCATION BOOST: NASARAWA LAWMAKER TRAINS 100 TEACHERS
The legislator representing Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon, and Wamba Federal constituency at the National Assembly, Jeremiah Umaru, has educated no fewer than 100 educators from primary and secondary institutions across the 35 electoral wards within the constituency, with the objective of enhancing their capabilities for superior performance and improving the learning outcomes of students in the region.
In remarks made at the conclusion of the training program on Wednesday in the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the legislator stated that this initiative is a component of his strategic plan to invest in and advance the educational sector of the state.
He indicated that the training was focused on enhancing teachers’ skills in school management and employing Information Communication Technology to facilitate teaching and learning, ultimately aiming to render them more effective and efficient.
Consequently, he committed to perpetuating the training and extending it to encompass all educators in the constituency in accordance with global best practices.
Our correspondent notes that the training included presentations on topics such as The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Teacher Education, Effective School Leadership Management: The Role of Principals and Head Teachers, Effective Financial Management in School Administration, and Drug Abuse and its Impact on Student Performance.
During the event, there was a debate competition among various schools within the Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon, and Wamba federal constituency, where the legislator awarded over N10 million in cash prizes to the victors.
This debate, now in its second iteration, was organized by the Federal legislator for secondary schools within the 35 electoral wards of his constituency.
In an interview with journalists following the debate, Umaru expressed his admiration for the participants’ confidence, composure, and their logical presentation of arguments.
He commended the educators from the various participating schools for instilling knowledge and values in the students.
The legislator remarked that the debate aimed to foster connections among the students and grant them a platform to address a broader audience.
“The connections established today will enhance their academic endeavors and fortify their public speaking skills, aiding them in realizing their future aspirations.
“It has facilitated a peer review space between students from governmental institutions and their counterparts in private schools. Many of us were similarly nurtured through debates and quiz competitions during our educational journeys,” he stated.
He further vowed to consistently initiate programs across various sectors to empower his constituents and to affirm the support they bestowed upon him to represent them at the National Assembly.
The media also reports that the legislator awarded prizes to the top-performing students and schools that excelled in the competition, along with consolation prizes for all participating institutions.
Shepherd International College, Akwanga, claimed the title of overall champion, while Government Science Secondary School, Wamba, and Our Lady of Fatima College, Ogba, Nassarawa-Eggon secured the positions of first and second runners-up, respectively.
He donated a cheque of N1 million along with five laptops to the victor of the debate, while providing N700,000 and three laptops to the first runner-up, and N500,000 and two laptops to the second runner-up, respectively.
Umaru also awarded N500,000 and one laptop to the top speaker, N250,000 and one laptop to the second-best speaker, and N150,000 and one laptop to the third-best speaker in the competition.
Furthermore, he granted N200,000 and educational resources to each of the remaining 32 schools that participated in the debate competition.
In a related report, the media conveys that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated on October 9, 2025, that the Federal Government is pursuing a definitive agenda aimed at revitalizing the teaching profession in the nation.
The minister also emphasized that the strength of Nigeria is contingent upon the caliber of its educators. Alausa made this statement during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration hosted by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union in Abuja.
Alausa characterized the theme of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day as both a homage and a challenge.
“It serves as a reminder that educators are not merely conveyors of knowledge, but guardians of stability and architects of transformation. Teachers have remained leaders and unrecognized heroes in our nation’s narrative, ensuring that our youth are equipped to construct a more promising future. “
