Nigeria‘s Super Eagles have advanced four positions to 41st in the most recent FIFA Men’s World Rankings, making a comeback to the upper echelons of football nations in Africa.
The revised rankings, published on Friday by FIFA, represent a notable improvement for Nigeria, which ascended from 45th place due to recent impressive performances in its qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup.
The three-time African champions have also surpassed the Ivory Coast, which is now positioned 42nd in the world.
Nigeria‘s ascent in the rankings follows a successful streak in their qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which featured a 2–1 triumph over Lesotho in Polokwane and a decisive 4–0 victory against the Benin Republic in Uyo.
These outcomes not only enhanced their ranking points but also guaranteed Nigeria’s position in the continental playoffs for the 2026 World Cup.
The Super Eagles are now prepared to confront Gabon, presently ranked 77th globally and 15th in Africa, for a spot in the ultimate playoff round, where either Cameroon or DR Congo may be anticipated.
On the continental arena, Morocco continues to hold the title of Africa’s highest-rated team, despite a minor decline to 12th position globally.
Senegal occupies the second spot on the continent and ranks 18th worldwide, while Egypt (32nd) and Algeria (35th) complete Africa’s top four, with Nigeria finishing the top five.
Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Mali, Cameroon, and South Africa round out Africa’s top ten.
On a global scale, Spain maintains its status as the team to surpass at the pinnacle of the FIFA world rankings, solidifying their dominance with consecutive World Cup qualifying victories over Georgia and Bulgaria.
France is also favorably positioned to secure a spot in the tournament in North America, though they must wait slightly longer after following a 3–0 triumph against Azerbaijan with a 2–2 stalemate against Iceland.
World Cup champions Argentina capitalized on Les Bleus’ misstep by ascending back to second place with friendly wins against Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
