The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has rolled out new rules on how Nigerians should perform the national anthem and pledge at public events.

In a statement shared on Friday, the agency directed that only the first stanza of the anthem be sung at official functions, while the third stanza should serve as the national prayer, to be rendered at the start of events.

NOA added that all three stanzas are reserved for major national occasions such as Independence Day, Presidential Inaugurations, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy Day (June 12) and the inauguration of the National Assembly.

The agency also instructed that the national pledge must be recited at the end of every event, urging Nigerians to uphold respect for the nation’s symbols.

“Let us maintain the dignity and reverence of our national symbols,” NOA said in the statement.

The directive comes months after President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024, which reinstated “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the country’s anthem, replacing “Arise, O Compatriots.”

The law, passed by the National Assembly in May, sparked mixed reactions — with some Nigerians hailing the return of the pre-1978 anthem for its historical significance, while others faulted the move amid the nation’s economic challenges.
