The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended an automobile theft syndicate functioning in Lagos and adjacent states, successfully recovering five stolen vehicles and multiple firearms in the process.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, while addressing journalists at the location of the syndicate in the Igando district on Friday, announced that the command had accomplished another significant breakthrough.
Jimoh indicated that three members of the gang were detained at their residence, which served as their hideout, where they orchestrated and executed assaults on unsuspecting motorists.
“The syndicate specialized in masquerading as passengers to strip drivers of their vehicles during transit. “
“They typically enter vehicles as passengers, and as the trip advances, they seize the possessions of the vehicle owners,“ he stated.
The police chief advised private car owners, particularly civil servants and professionals, to refrain from transporting unfamiliar passengers for compensation to mitigate fuel expenses.
“It is extremely perilous. If you cannot manage the cost of fuel, it is wiser to leave your vehicle stationary until you are able. Many of these criminals exploit such circumstances,“ he cautioned.
He observed that although one of the documented occurrences took place in the Lekki-Ajah region of Lagos, inquiries uncovered that the group had additionally functioned in Oyo and Edo states.
“Our thorough examination of that particular offense resulted in multiple recoveries. To date, we have retrieved approximately five vehicles, two of which are present here,“ he stated.
Jimoh noted that among the items recovered from the suspects were a pump-action firearm, a British–manufactured pistol with obliterated serial numbers, live cartridges, and charms believed to be utilized for protection during operations.
Jimoh further reassured residents that the command remains steadfast in its commitment to combating crime. “We are excelling in terms of crime prevention, management, and timely detection.
“Lagos is secure, and we will persist in ensuring that every criminal act is swiftly identified and perpetrators apprehended,“ he affirmed.
“We want residents to be our first line of defence. If you notice people without a clear means of livelihood or those who move in and out at odd hours, report to us.
“Criminals are not spirits; they live among us,” he said.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for providing logistics, tactical support, and operational vehicles that have enhanced policing in Lagos.
