Viktor Gyokeres ended his goal drought in style as Arsenal crushed Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, maintaining their perfect start to the Champions League campaign.

Goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring before Gyokeres struck twice in a blistering 13-minute spell, sealing a commanding win that leaves the Premier League leaders top of Group A with nine points from three matches alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

The Swedish striker, signed from Sporting Lisbon to provide Arsenal with a clinical finisher, had scored just three goals in 11 games before his brace against Diego Simeone’s side.

Atletico, meanwhile, remain winless on the road this season and endured a second straight away defeat in England after their loss to Liverpool last month.

After a goalless first half that saw Julian Alvarez hit the bar and Eberechi Eze denied by the woodwork, Arsenal broke through via a familiar source a set piece. Declan Rice’s teasing free-kick found Gabriel, whose stooping header opened the floodgates.

Minutes later, Myles Lewis-Skelly, recalled at left-back, surged forward to assist Martinelli, who curled in a superb second to continue his fine European form.

Gyokeres then struck twice — first via a deflection off David Hancko, then with a close-range finish following another Gabriel header from a Rice corner.

With the game sealed, Mikel Arteta was able to rest key players including Gyokeres, Eze, and Gabriel ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

Arsenal, who reached the Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time since 2009, look even stronger this term after another ambitious summer of spending and are increasingly seen as genuine contenders for a maiden European crown.
