The Edo State Government has directed all Heads of Local Government Administration across the 18 local councils to proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect.

The directive was issued by the Chairman of the Edo State Local Government Service Commission, Kabiru Adjoto, during a media briefing in Benin.

Adjoto announced that Directors of Administrative and General Services in each council will take charge of operations pending further directives from the state government.

In the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, both the Head of Local Government Administration and the Director of Finance were also asked to proceed on leave following a petition against them.

Adjoto explained that the move is part of the government’s ongoing effort to reform the local government system under its “Shine Agenda,” aimed at improving accountability, transparency, and efficiency in grassroots governance.

He added that the decision followed an extensive tour and assessment of all 18 councils, after which the commission concluded that a review of postings, staff deployment, and council operations was necessary.

The commission also announced plans to digitise its operations and introduce regular training and retraining programmes to enhance staff productivity and service delivery across the local government system.
