ACTIVIST ACCUSES PRESIDENT TINUBU OF UNDERMINING JUDICIARY OVER CORRECTIVE ACTION IN SOWORE CASE

A prominent human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, has condemned the arrest of former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, saying the move is a blatant “mockery” of the judicial system and an assault on the rule of law.

Sowore was detained shortly after appearing in court in Abuja in connection with the ongoing case of Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court, Abuja. Effiong argues that the manner of the arrest—carried out directly from the court and on alleged orders of the FCT Commissioner of Police—raises serious questions about executive overreach and judicial independence.

According to Effiong, the police informed Sowore they were acting on the commissioner’s directive, prompting him and observers to question the legal basis for the arrest, including the absence of a formal invitation letter and the denial of his right to counsel. He warned that such actions risk turning the judiciary into a mere puppet of the executive.

Authorities defending the operation pointed to an existing court order restricting public protests around sensitive government buildings as justification for their intervention. Meanwhile, Sowore’s legal representatives say they have been denied access to their client since his transfer to the FCT Police Command, raising concerns over his right to fair legal representation.

Effiong is calling for Sowore’s immediate release and insists that the government must respect judicial protocols if Nigeria’s justice system is to maintain its credibility.
