BREAKING: POLICE ARREST SOWORE AFTER COURT APPEARANCE FOR KANU

Read Time:1 Minute, 6 Second

Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore was arrested by armed police officers immediately after his appearance at the Federal High Court, Abuja for the trial of Nnamdi Kanu. The arrest followed his involvement in public mobilisation for Kanu’s release.

Sowore was approached by police officers at the court precincts. When asked why he was being taken in, an officer said he was acting on orders from the Commissioner of Police. Despite questioning the lack of an official letter of invitation and insisting his lawyer should accompany him, Sowore was placed into a police van and escorted to the FCT Police Command.

His arrest comes after the #FreeKanu protest held earlier in the week in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria. During that protest, 12 individuals, including Kanu’s younger brother and one of his lawyers, were arrested and remanded based on allegations of inciting disturbance, chanting war songs, and obstructing traffic in defiance of a court order. The charges include criminal conspiracy, disturbance of public peace, and offences under sections 152, 114 and 113 of the Penal Code Law.

It remains unclear whether Sowore will be added as a defendant in the pending case linked to the protest.
