JAILBREAKER REARRESTED ONE YEAR AFTER SULEJA PRISON ESCAPE AS POLICE BUST ROBBERY GANG IN NIGER
The Niger State Police Command says it has rearrested a convicted armed robber who escaped from the Suleja Correctional Centre one year ago, and rounded up members of another robbery gang operating in the area.
The fugitive, identified as Jemilu Ibrahim, was recaptured on October 15, 2025, during a routine patrol by officers from the “B” Division, Suleja. Ibrahim — who had escaped after part of the prison wall collapsed during heavy rains in 2024 — was intercepted on the Suleja–Madalla Road at about 8:30 p.m. with a container of illicit substances and several suspected stolen items, including ATM cards and mobile phones. He has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for processing and handover to the Correctional Service.
In a related operation, police rescued and arrested 23-year-old Lukman Umar after he was nearly lynched by an angry mob in Suleja on October 19. Umar was initially picked up after allegedly attempting to leave a food stall without paying. Further questioning by detectives revealed he was part of a robbery syndicate that specialises in stealing vehicles, motorcycles and phones.
Umar reportedly named several accomplices — including Saifullahi Ibrahim (34), Lawali, Garba and Ayuba — and police later arrested Saifullahi at his home in Dakwa. Officers recovered three locally fabricated revolver-type guns and two knives at the house. Both suspects confessed to posing as community vigilantes to carry out their criminal acts, police said.
The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate and that the suspects will be charged to court once enquiries are complete.
The two operations mark a notable success for security patrols in Suleja and underscore continuing efforts by the police to round up escapees from last year’s correctional facility breach and to disrupt organised criminal networks operating under the guise of community vigilantes.
Authorities urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activity and warned that anyone found participating in or facilitating criminal gangs would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
