The newly appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan (SAN), has pledged to deliver elections that are transparently managed, credible, and fair to all participants.

Speaking shortly after his confirmation by the Senate, Amupitan said his vision would ensure that even losing candidates will feel confident enough to congratulate winners, reflecting the level of integrity he aims to bring to the process.

He committed to improving logistical and technological systems within INEC, strengthening voter-education efforts, and mitigating past voting irregularities that eroded public trust. Amupitan also addressed concerns about neutrality, assuring that under his leadership the electoral commission would operate without bias toward any political party or candidate.

Observers say this commitment comes at a crucial juncture, with off-cycle elections approaching and ongoing calls for electoral reform in Nigeria. Analysts note that fulfilling the promise will require correcting known issues like delayed result collation, weak enforcement of electoral rules, and improved protection of the integrity of voting materials and transmission systems.

Amupitan’s appointment signals a renewed expectation that Nigeria’s electoral umpire will steer the country toward more credible polls — but his success will ultimately depend on visible outcomes rather than assurances alone.
