LAGOS GOVERNMENT STARTS PAYING COMPENSATION TO OWORONSHOKI RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY DEMOLITION EXERCISE
The Lagos State Government has initiated the disbursement of compensation to residents affected in Oworonshoki, located within the Kosofe Local Government Area, fulfilling its prior commitment to those impacted by the ongoing urban renewal and revitalization initiative in the region.
This process, which commenced on Thursday, October 23, 2025, has been characterized as a testament to the administration’s dedication to equitable and considerate urban development.
During a well-attended event held at the palace of Oworonshoki’s traditional leader, the General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), TPL/ESV Olajide Animashaun, stated that the compensation payments resulted from extensive verification, engagement, and enumeration efforts conducted in conjunction with local community stakeholders.
Animashaun indicated that the revitalization effort was essential due to the emergence of unauthorized and deteriorating structures in Oworonshoki, many of which encroached upon drainage channels and waterways, thereby presenting significant environmental and safety concerns.
“Oworonshoki is among the communities identified in the state’s broad urban renewal and regeneration strategy. Numerous affected buildings were deemed unsuitable for habitation and posed environmental threats. Nevertheless, in alignment with the inclusive governance philosophy of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the state pledged to compensate verified displaced residents, and today, that commitment is being honored,” Animashaun remarked.
He conveyed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his progressive leadership and steadfast dedication to the well-being of Lagos citizens, emphasizing that the compensation initiative epitomizes the government’s transparency and accountability in executing its urban renewal strategies.
Animashaun also recognized the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development as well as the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, for their commitment and relentless efforts toward the fruition of this initiative.
The gathering saw participation from representatives of the Oworonshoki traditional council, Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Council (CDC) members, civil society organizations, security agencies, and the media.
It is noteworthy that the Lagos State Government has recently dismantled numerous illegal and substandard constructions across Oworonshoki as part of a broader effort to reclaim drainage system rights-of-way, enhance environmental conditions, and promote public safety.
As reported by LASURA, a total of 79 beneficiaries were validated for compensation, which will be disbursed in two installments, with the first group receiving their checks on Thursday, and the second group to be addressed on Friday at the same location.
Some beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to the state government for upholding its promise.
Mrs. Ajimoh Oyenuga remarked, “The government provided us this monetary compensation for the homes demolished on Precious Street, Oworonshoki. We are thankful as it demonstrates the government’s concern for our welfare. ”
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Olaide Fatima, noted, “My house was situated near the water, and it was not secure. The government assured us of compensation, and today they have fulfilled that promise. I genuinely appreciate this gesture; a promise made is a promise kept. ”
The LASURA director reiterated the organization’s dedication to guaranteeing that urban revitalization initiatives throughout Lagos are executed with equity and openness, while emphasizing the well-being of residents and communities impacted by development endeavors.
