The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has debunked media reports claiming that activist and #FreeNnamdiKanuNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, was rearrested on Friday on fresh charges after his initial bail.

Reports had circulated suggesting that Sowore was apprehended immediately after leaving court and taken to Kuje Prison, where he was allegedly being held pending arraignment on Monday.

However, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed the reports as false and “procedurally incorrect.”

In a statement on Friday, Hundeyin said:

“Your story that he was arrested on a fresh charge and ‘whisked away… to Kuje Prison… to be arraigned on Monday’ is procedurally incorrect. A person arrested on a fresh charge cannot be taken straight to prison. No prison will accept such a person without a remand warrant duly issued by a competent court.”

He clarified that Sowore was taken to prison only to perfect his bail conditions, as directed by the court.

“He was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant pending when he meets his bail conditions, nothing more,” Hundeyin added.

Sowore was reportedly arrested on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja shortly after meeting with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The police reiterated their commitment to following due process and urged the public to disregard misleading reports suggesting a fresh arrest.
