President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new service chiefs as part of a sweeping reorganisation of Nigeria’s military leadership aimed at strengthening national security.

In the latest appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede was named Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. Major General W. Shaibu becomes the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke takes over as Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas assumes office as Chief of Naval Staff. Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The appointments take immediate effect and come amid growing security challenges across the country, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and separatist tensions in the South-East.

The new military leadership is expected to bring renewed energy and strategic direction to the armed forces, with a focus on improved intelligence sharing, operational efficiency, and inter-agency collaboration.

Security analysts view the move as a decisive step by the Tinubu administration to bolster Nigeria’s defence structure and restore public confidence in the country’s security institutions.

The newly appointed service chiefs are expected to prioritise the protection of lives and property, enhance troop welfare, and strengthen coordination in tackling the nation’s evolving security threats.
