President Bola Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in the Nigerian Armed Forces, appointing General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff.

The announcement marks a significant overhaul of the country’s military leadership aimed at strengthening national security operations. Oluyede takes over from General Christopher Musa, who has been relieved of his duties.

In the new appointments, Major General W. Shaibu becomes Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke is now Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas takes charge as Chief of Naval Staff. Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

President Tinubu, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, praised the outgoing service chiefs for their dedication and service to the nation. He urged the newly appointed officers to uphold professionalism, integrity, and unity in carrying out their duties.

The president emphasized that the appointments were made to inject fresh ideas and renewed energy into the fight against insecurity, especially amid rising challenges such as insurgency, banditry, and separatist tensions across various parts of the country.

Defence analysts have described the move as a strategic effort to re-energize the military’s approach to intelligence, logistics, and inter-service coordination. The new service chiefs are expected to focus on improving operational effectiveness, boosting troop morale, and restoring public confidence in the Armed Forces.

All appointments take immediate effect.
