By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a notorious “one chance” robbery syndicate allegedly responsible for the death of a 23-year-old lady, Miss Grace Godwin, in Abuja.
The suspects Kabiru Abdullahi (25) and Solomon Tanko (35) were apprehended by operatives of the command’s Scorpion Squad following an intensive investigation into the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday, explaining that the incident occurred on July 11, 2025, when the deceased, who worked as a fuel-pump attendant, boarded a commercial vehicle operated by the criminal gang while returning home from work.
A day later, her unconscious body was discovered along Iya Abubakar Street, Life Camp, and she was rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
“On July 12, 2025, the command received a distress report that the unconscious body of a young woman was discovered by the roadside along Iya Abubakar Street, Life Camp,” Adeh said.
“Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, and the victim, later identified as Miss Grace Godwin, was evacuated to the hospital, where she was sadly confirmed dead. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had unknowingly boarded a vehicle operated by a ‘one chance’ robbery syndicate,” the statement added.
With the aid of digital reconstructive intelligence, operatives traced and arrested the two suspects, who were later identified as residents of the Dape community, the same area where the victim lived.
Further investigation revealed that during the robbery, the deceased recognised some of the gang members, prompting one of them, Abdullahi, to strangle her with a plastic nylon bag after she bit his finger in self-defence.
Items recovered from the suspects include a golden-coloured Toyota Camry (popularly known as “Pencil Light”) and plastic nylon bags used in committing the crime.
Adeh noted that efforts were ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the syndicate.
The term “one chance” refers to a form of robbery in which criminals pose as commercial vehicle operators, luring unsuspecting passengers before robbing, assaulting, or sometimes killing them.
Despite repeated police operations, such incidents continue to pose a recurring security challenge in Abuja and other major Nigerian cities, particularly around high-traffic and residential areas.
