Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Tuesday empowered 5,200 women across the state’s 44 local government areas with a total of ₦260 million, as part of the state government’s ongoing women empowerment initiative.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the gesture was part of his administration’s efforts to uplift women economically and promote self-reliance among vulnerable groups.
He disclosed that new accountability and transparency measures had been introduced following discrepancies discovered during the first phase of the empowerment programme.
“Following the discovery of discrepancies in the disbursement during the first phase, we introduced measures to ensure the money reaches the targeted beneficiaries,” Yusuf stated.
According to him, a 20-member committee was constituted in each local government area, comprising traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and party leaders, among others, to oversee the fair distribution of funds.
The governor urged the beneficiaries to use the financial support to start or expand small-scale businesses, improve their livelihoods, and support their families.
“This support is in fulfillment of the promise we made during the 2023 campaigns to make women self-reliant and support the health and welfare of mothers and children,” he said.
He further assured that the empowerment programme would continue in phases, with future rounds incorporating additional reforms to strengthen transparency and accountability.
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo cautioned the beneficiaries against diverting the funds, noting that the initiative was designed to improve their economic well-being and reduce poverty.
Several beneficiaries who spoke at the event expressed gratitude to the state government for the intervention, describing it as timely support that would help them establish businesses and support their families.
